Agile, Agile, Agile

Just saw a GREAT video by David Hussman and Tor Stenstad on a multi-million dollar project using Agile and how it helped them improve on a previous RUP-based approach.

They focus on some key principles that I really liked:

  1. Support from Business is crucial. Not only as a supporter, but as a participant in the project in every single iteration.
  2. Involvement from the Team in a way that keeps everyone in sync with where the project is RIGHT NOW (by using mechanisms as burn-down charts).
  3. Iterations - Very small iterations. As small as possible, don't go crazy on 1 week ones. Use what works for you.
  4. Don't be afraid to make changes! If the project is running out of tracks, study why is that and make changed to bring it back on track.

This is just some value I got from the presentation. I really advise you to go check it out.

Thank you for your comments and good luck with your agile implementation. For us, GMAC, it made a great difference in our delivery and business alignment. I am sure you will see the same in your agile adventures.

Remember:

• Show them the money!

 * Keep the plan alive – respect the budget

 * Nothing like success

• Respect the real costs of change

 * Human change – corporate change

• People engage when they are connected

 * Chartering – Products – Retrospectives

 * Forums for being heard and respected

Enjoy your journey,

Tor Stenstad
