Trying Out Safari

I'm giving Apple's Safari Browser a whirl. It will never replace IE7 for me because of the many Microsoft specific type things I often deal with such as OWA and SharePoint. It seems to be YANB (Yet Another Browser) with the usual Apple cosmetics. Then again what else should it be? It's always fun to play with a new interface.

I have found that it worked well and fast with Outlook Web Access 2007 in light mode but have had no success with OWA 2003 - or at least the OWA 2003 from my employer Magenic.

I have already tested Silverlight (never expected it to work- not supposed to yet) and it didn't work but it's not like it crashes either. It will entirely bomb out when hitting SharePoint 2003 or MOSS sites.

I have yet to try the RSS features. Having taken a quick look at the bookmarks section which also includes the RSS feeds and it looks a lot like the iTunes interface.

I have noticed and it is very frustrating to me that when you click in the address bar it generates a cursor in that location on the address bar. Not sure if this is how most Apple interfaces work but I much prefer the IE mechanism where it selects the entire URL when you click the address bar (activate the control)because usually if I click into the address bar I want to type a new address not edit the existing one. To accomplish this in Safari: 1 click gets me a single cursor, two rapid clicks gets me a highlighted word and 3 rapid clicks gets me the entire URL selected for easy replacement. This is a standard mechanism for most software but I do like when my browser address bar starts with the full URL highlighted when I activate the control. Then fall into the standard 1,2, 3 click routine if I want to edit the existing URL.

You may want to give it a whirl if you aren't a browser zealot and see if there are things you like and things you don't.
